NCFAP's National Pesticide Use Database

A unique, comprehensive database of pesticide use in agricultural production throughout the United States has been compiled by the National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy. The latest version covers pesticide use in 1992, and draws on state and industry reports of pesticide use from 1990-1993.

The database and accompanying hard copy report detail pesticide use for 200 different active chemical ingredients used on 87 different crops in the 48 contiguous states, and is representative of the 1992 growing season. The data is available electronically on two diskettes in both dBase and ASCII data files.

In preparing the reports, researchers Leonard P. Gianessi and James Earl Anderson have drawn on 108 pesticide use surveys conducted by federal and state agencies. They have also conducted personal interviews with pesticide experts and chemical manufacturers.

The NCFAP National Pesticide Use Database is a comprehensive, publicly available database. Regulatory officials, researchers, environmental groups, and agricultural businesses will find the reports invaluable in designing policies, evaluating proposed regulatory actions, monitoring for pesticides in the environment, or conducting market research. The database will be updated in 1997.

NATIONAL SUMMARY
Pesticide Use in U.S. Crop Production:
National Summary Report

by Leonard P. Gianessi and James Earl Anderson

This report presents complete information about how the database was compiled. It also summarizes the use of pesticides, presenting the total pounds of pesticides applied by active ingredient, crop, state, and pesticide type. It also presents national use patterns for each active ingredient indicating usage and acreage treated by crop. Data references and a list of chemical manufacturers and trade names are also provided.

STATE REPORTS Pesticide Use in "State" Crop Production
(separate reports are available for each state)

These reports provide detailed pesticide use data for each state. For each crop and active ingredient combination, a data record tabulates the application rate, percent acres treated, and planted acreage. Also, the total number of acres treated and number of pounds applied are estimated. Tables are organized by crop, pesticide type, and active ingredient. Complete documentation of the database and how it was compiled is also provided, including a reference list and a list of chemical manufacturers and trade names.

AN ECONOMIC PROFILE OF THE U.S. CROP PROTECTION INDUSTRY

By Leonard P. Gianessi

This report provides comprehensive data on pesticide industry sales by active ingredient and by company. Profiles are presented of 18 leading pesticide manufactures, describing total sales by type of pesticide, leading products, marketshare by company for products sold by more than one manufacturer, and merger and acquisition activity. Throughout, the report highlights factors affecting company sales. A useful summary table presents data by active ingredient: total pounds sold, $/pound active ingredient, and total sales. The report contains unique insights into the economic and regulatory factors driving consolidation in the industry.

DATA REPORT Pesticide Use in U.S. Crop Production:
National Data Report

This report provides the detailed national database in tabular and diskette form. The diskette files are in dBase III+ and ASCII fixed length format. The tables are organized by active ingredient, crop and state. Complete documentation is provided for diskettes and data tables. All of the records for the 48 state reports are included.
